A Community Initiative Takes Shape
Bo-Kaap Handball Club NPO is a registered non-profit organization dedicated to empowering children and teenagers from the Bo-Kaap community through sport, education, and teamwork. Founded in 2022, the club has grown to include more than 60 active players and a team of committed coaches and volunteers who run training sessions, tournaments, and community activities that promote confidence, discipline, and inclusion.
The First Step
The idea began with a simple act. Philipp, the club’s founder, printed a few posters and hung them up around Bo-Kaap, inviting young people to come and try handball. On the first day, he arrived at the public park with a ball and waited. One child came, then another. Over the following weeks, more joined — curious to learn a sport new to most of them. What started as a few kids playing in the park soon grew into a close-knit group with shared energy and purpose.
Building More Than a Team
“From the beginning, our goal was to create something meaningful for the youth here in Bo-Kaap,” says Philipp. “Handball was just the starting point. What really matters is giving these young people a space to grow, to believe in themselves, and to see that they can achieve something through commitment and teamwork.”
Today, the club fields several teams, from the U8 mixed team to the U19 boys’ and girls’ squads, who train regularly and compete in leagues and tournaments across the Western Cape. Players develop technical skills, tactical understanding, and life values that extend far beyond the court.
A Hub for Unity and Growth
Bo-Kaap Handball Club has become an important part of the local community. Events such as the annual Bo-Kaap Handball Tournament and the Iftar gathering during Ramadan bring families, friends, and neighbors together to celebrate teamwork, culture, and connection. For many young players, the club has become a second home — a place where they feel supported, challenged, and proud of who they are.
A Lasting Impact
What began with a few posters and a single ball has grown into a community movement built on hope, effort, and shared belief. Bo-Kaap Handball Club NPO continues to show what’s possible when sport meets purpose and when a community comes together to create real opportunities for its youth. Stay tuned and follow our journey in changing young lives!
