On 20 September 2025, young players from the Bo-Kaap Handball Club took part in the PlayHandball Supercup at the German International School in Cape Town. Our U12 and U14 teams were invited to participate alongside school teams from across the city, giving our players the chance to experience a new sporting environment and compete outside their league setting.
For many of the children, tournaments like this are about more than results. They offer exposure to structured competition, unfamiliar opponents, and new surroundings — all important parts of learning and growing through sport. The Supercup provided meaningful game time and allowed players to put their training into practice while building confidence on the court.

The U14 team progressed through the tournament and finished as overall winners, while the U12 team reached the final after a series of competitive matches. Both teams faced challenges throughout the day, which created opportunities to learn about teamwork, discipline, and dealing with pressure in a supportive environment.
An important part of the day was the involvement of some of our U20 players, who stepped into new roles beyond playing. They supported the event by helping with organisation and serving as referees during matches. This gave them practical experience in responsibility, leadership, and giving back to the sport. Taking on these roles allowed them to contribute to the event while developing skills that are just as important as those learned on the court.

Beyond the games, this year’s Supercup focused on Sustainable Development Goal 14: Life Below Water – Keep it alive. Environmental awareness activities formed part of the event, encouraging participants to think about responsibility and care for the world around them. These messages align closely with our work in Bo-Kaap, where sport is used not only to develop skills, but also to support positive values and community awareness.
Participation in events like the PlayHandball Supercup helps ensure that children from Bo-Kaap have access to experiences that broaden their horizons and connect them to the wider sporting community. It reinforces our aim to create consistent opportunities for youth to learn, play, and grow through handball.

We thank PlayHandball for the invitation and the organisation of the event, as well as the coaches, families, and volunteers who supported the teams on the day.
